Keeping Up Yoga Practice When Traveling

Hi there,

Over the years, I’ve tried many forms of yoga. Hot yoga, vinyasa, and ashtanga. I never really got into a specific type but I always felt better after my practice.

Personally, I really like being in person in a studio with a yoga instructor versus doing an online program. I will admit, though that having an online option is incredibly helpful especially when I travel or when I just want to be alone. Or for the times when I don’t want to be in a pack studio. It’s great that there are so many more online instructors sharing content.

As a Beach Bodi subscriber, I looked into their yoga programs and I found quite a few that I enjoy.

Committing to my practice

I had to commit to my practice. When I would take days off or multiple days in a row, I never felt quite as good as if I had practiced consecutive days, so I knew I needed to get into a rhythm. My goal was to practice at least a yoga session in the morning and in a perfect world I would also practice in the evening.

They say it takes about 2 weeks of doing something repeatedly before it becomes a habit. For me, it takes even longer. It took about 3.5 weeks before I felt the pull of the habit and it became easier for me to think about the action less and trust the process.

What drove me the 3.5 weeks was ‘how’ I felt after each session. I was more grounded, more centered, and overall just better. At first my arms, glutes, stomach muscles were tight and weak but overtime they became stronger and more toned. I craved that.

AM and PM Yoga

Morning yoga is typically 30 minutes to an hour with a goal of waking up stretching and or doing a power flow; something to get the muscles warmed up. In the evening, my yoga practice is more about meditation stillness and stretching. Generally speaking, it’s a shorter session and typically lasts between 15 minutes to 30 minutes

4 Yoga Items to Pack When Traveling

For my job, I have to travel a bit so I wanted to make sure that I held myself accountable for yoga sessions.

  1. Travel Yoga Mat: I decided to order a travel yoga mat in hopes of keeping my practice going even while on the road. While the mat is somewhat heavy, it is thin and easy to fold and pack. It has this technology that allows the hands and feet to be more grippy and your hands do not slip. It absolutely does a job, especially we’re not at home whenever I travel.
  2. Water Bottle: This seems straightforward but sometimes when you travel, it’s easy to forget or misplace. Make sure to pack an eco-friendly water bottle, so that your practice does not suffer from distraction of thirst (& you stay hydrated).
  3. Yoga Outfit: If you’re anything like me, dressing for your workout is part of the experience. Pack a yoga outfit that will inspire you to practice. These leggings from UNIQLO are my favorite (I have them in quite a few colors) and having a comfortable sports bra is also mandatory. A thoughtful yoga outfit ensures that you arrive to your practice less stressed and motivated. See below for a list of yoga clothing.
  4. AirPods or headphones: Often times, there are distractions in my new environment. A refrigerator humming or other travelers passing by. I always pack my AirPods so that I can drown sound out and create a focused atmosphere. Since I have the yoga Beach Bodi videos on my phone, I have guidance to help ensure I get the most out of my practice.

Tip: If you have extra to give, consider adding in some type of cardio, lifting weights or calisthenics.

Strappy Sports Bra
Backless Workout Top
Criss Cross Sports Bra
Workout Shorts (great for yoga in warm weather!)

Traveling is such a unique experience (even if it’s mandatory travel). To help you get the most out of your experience and to help stay centered, consider taking your practice with you wherever you go. A couple of simple additions to your luggage will go a long way.

Think about it,

M
